You've seen the transition: a video starts as chunky 8-bit pixels, climbs through 240p and 720p, and resolves into a clean 4K reveal. It works because the viewer feels one continuous shot getting sharper.
Which is exactly where most attempts fall apart.
One motion, four resolutions
The common mistake is generating a new video at each quality level. The camera move differs slightly every time, so the transition reads as four clips cut together instead of one image resolving. The illusion dies instantly.
The fix: build one master hero shot with one motion language, then derive every resolution step from that same clip. The 144p version is the master degraded, not a fresh generation.
Restraint at 720p
144p and 240p are easy — heavy pixelation hides everything. 720p is where it goes wrong, because the temptation is to make it obviously "mid quality". Real 720p is close to clean. Overdo it and the final reveal has nothing left to reveal.
The ladder is an edit, not a generation
Assembly happens in CapCut: stack the resolution steps, time each rung to the beat, and let the last transition breathe. Sound does most of the work — a rising tone across the ladder sells the upgrade more than the pixels do.
